Think You Have What It Takes?
Roller derby is a fast-paced, hard-hitting sport. It looks scary and intimidating, but to the girls on the team, it's just another day in the life. When you join up with the Regulators, you'll gain valuable sports knowledge, get fit and form a relationship and bond with a great group of people who really will become your second family.
How do I get started?
Just show up! You can email us from the Contact Us link on our webpage, contact us via facebook or just approach us when we're out or after a bout! We have our Fresh Meat (beginner) practices at 7:00 pm on Monday nights or 6:00pm on Sundays at our warehouse at 1641 Cox Street in Columbia. It's our own little piece of paradise. You'll be working with Jason, our skating coach, or with a veteran skater to improve your skills. We have safety gear for you to wear such as knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards and a helmet you can try out during your first few practices. SAFETY GEAR IS REQUIRED. We skate on concrete, so we're just looking out for you. We also have pairs of skates in varying sizes you can try out. Not ready to roll yet? Come hang out and watch a practice to get a feel for what we do. We practice Sunday evenings at 6:00pm, and Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7. We'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Who can join?
We accept any skaters who are 21 years or older. It doesn't matter how old you are, how out of shape you may be (you won't be for long!) or if you think you'd get your butt kicked--that's why we're here to teach you. The Regulators have day jobs, we’re moms, students, teachers, government employees, hairdressers and massage therapists. Roller derby is our escape from day-to-day life and our opportunity to embrace a tougher, edgier side of ourselves. If you've got a good attitude and a desire and will to play roller derby, you're in!
What does it take to make the grade and become a Regulator?
In order to be an official team member of the Richland County Regulators, you must make our weekly practices (at least the two Fresh Meat practices for beginners)--this will increase to three practices a week once you're really rolling. You will eventually need to provide your own equipment, including skates, knee pads, wrist guards, elbow pads, helmet and mouthguard. We've got some gear you can try out, but you will need to get your own eventually that will truly fit your body. There are attendance requirements, skills assessments and monthly dues (currently $40 per month) as well as USARollersports Insurance of $40 per year. We have events monthly to raise money for the team and promote local businesses and put on several bouts a year. Even if you are not rostered yet, you can still be vital to helping out the league by volunteering and cheering on your team. In no time at all, you'll be a real rollergirl!
